What is value addition?

You have any kind of raw material. Then, you further process it to make a product out of it. The product will last longer. The product can be sold at a higher price, unlike the raw material. This process is called value addition.

It applies to everything. During your college life, you have to keep adding value to yourself. Then only, you will be suitable for a higher pay. Those who understand the concept keep investing their time in learning new things.

In India, students are said to be having very low skills or no skills to tackle modern-day jobs. Due to this, students find it difficult to get into the job market. Engineering students have to learn new tricks of trade apart from basic skills such as writing, presentation, and coding.

Every day, new things are coming; students need to keep an eye on those things. Nowadays, it is not difficult because of online resources. One can take online courses in UDEMY, COURSERA etc in their relevant field. Above all, one has to develop the mindset of ‘need to learn’ for a better future.

 Why is it so important?

If you want to follow the conventional route of getting jobs, you will have to enter a rat race. Otherwise, you can follow a different path and learn new things where there is no or little competition. There are such jobs. These jobs are for highly skilled people. The skills need to be honed over time. It is like sculpting which you cannot learn overnight. You have to give time to become an expert.

For conventional route goers, this route is closed. So, you can do things in your way and pace. Above all, such jobs are perceived as difficult and that is why, you can ask for a premium price for your service. People pay for difficult things.

We all get angry at many things. It is normal. But, engaging in a quarrel or disrespecting others due to your hot temperament is no good. You become unpopular among people and branded as a quarrelsome, obstinate and uptight person which is not good in the long term. People become hesitant to deal with you and ultimately, you are isolated. There is no doubt that your competitive party will further inflate the rumours and make you untouchable. You will feel why people are so distant these days. In schools, colleges, or offices, it happens all the time. It is a dog-eat-dog world. We have competitors who are willing to displace us or replace us at any moment. If you constantly show such a hot temperament, it becomes a good opportunity for them.

In my school days, I came to know this. We engaged in silly fights or debates all the time. After such conflicts, you generally do not feel good. If the conflict is big and is unsolved for many days, the uncomfortable feeling stays for many days. Moreover, you just keep explaining the whole thing again and again before people. It just enhances the pain and suffering. People just need spicy talks and nothing else. So, I learned an important lesson to manage anger and not to engage in unnecessary conflicts.

There are some techniques which can be used in such sticky situations when you encounter an aggressive person. You have to be very patient not to give any ammunition to the other person’s canon. You keep calm and listen to what the other person is saying. You give a professional answer as per the situation and take a deep breath. Deep breathing helps to calm the mind.  After the encounter, you try to divert your attention to some other work and do not keep repeating things before an audience.  Generally, people take your words and add spice to further feed a larger audience. On your part, you should play it as a small affair and let the issue roll on its own. You are to protect your image. If you maintain a calm and quiet demeanour, the other person will be automatically looked upon as an aggressor.

Cheating & its perils

 

One cold morning in this February month of 2024, I was sitting at a photocopy shop. I was getting some prints done at the shop. Then a group of students came to enquire about something. They asked the shopkeeper in a hushed way whether they could get mini photocopies at their shop. The shopkeeper turned them down immediately. It was apparent that they were getting those photocopies for cheating in the exam. This is very common now a day. One student will prepare the note and the whole gang would photocopy it. They are so busy that they cannot do those themselves.

For a few years, students are getting caught doing cheating exams and they get expelled for one year. Their names are shared to all departments for information. Sometimes, parents come and cause havoc at the departments. Then, they were told what to be told and things go by like this all the time.  When, a student gets expelled for a year, it is a great loss to the student because one year is totally wasted. Moreover, his impression gets tarnished at the department. Many a time, it affects the future performance. So, students should refrain from such activities.

When one does cheating and never gets caught, it becomes a bad habit. Slowly, the student becomes overconfident in his skill. Moreover, when you do cheating, you never learn. You have just wasted your time at the college. Later on when you apply for job, you get difficulty because you have learn nothing You had only fun all the time. Then, you have to put more years in coaching to come at par. You grow old as years go by and sometimes, you surpass your age to apply for job. If you see, for a four year engineering course, you have given four more years. It is just waste of time and money. So, you need to control your hunger to get marks without work by cheating. Sometimes, you will score low marks but you will gather concepts which will lessen your time in future. One should keep in mind, one has to gather the knowledge for a certain job, and then only you will clear written and interview round.

Necessity of Applied Engineering

Engineering in India is still theoretical level. The courses in various engineering programmes are totally theoretical basis. The applied knowledge is not at all taught in many engineering colleges. If you g to engineering colleges, you will find the laboratories are in locked condition throughout the years. This is a common sight in many colleges. Moreover, students also lack inquisitiveness to learn the things practically. After 13 years of experience in the engineering education field , I have hardly seen students’ enthusiasm regarding laboratories and any kind of project work. The projects are just redundant copy paste from youtube videos.  The lack to enthusiasm is not only evident in students, it has sipped into the minds of teaching fraternity also due to the surrounding culture. The problem has magnified over the years. As a result, we are lagging in innovation and innovation led entrepreneurship. The developed countries always innovate and manufacture goods. For the goods, they find the overseas markets and get rich. Indian engineers have to be more practical oriented rather than theoretical based.  In coming years, students have to be more skillful practically. Especially, the engineers have to adapt aggressively.

Projecting yourself differently

During colleges, all the students do same kind of studies, projects and internships. There is rarely anything new. In hundreds of vivas, I have observed that some students are something different even though they did projects or internships in groups. They project themselves differently and way of approaching things seems to be more maturer compared to their mates. This makes them stand out and elevates to different level. In interviews also, you will see that other candidates are also with same degrees and even same experience.You have to stand out among the others. So, you are to project yourself differently.

 

 You can do it every possible way while appearing an interview. While attending a lecture, seminar, workshop or internship, you have to keep your eyes and ears open all the time. One needs to absorb the salient things all the time related to your field of work. Then, only you can shine. Suppose, you have undergone a practical training in a machine shop, you are expected to explain elaborately things you have seen during an interview if you produce a certificate regarding that internship. People ask questions and expects answers because you have done it. If you cannot answer the questions, people perceive you as a casual person. So, one should avoid that impression in all respects. Your preparation regarding each and everything should be up to the mark or you become part of the crowd with no markings.
