A few years back, there was a model syllabus but it was not stressed that much by AICTE. Colleges took inspiration from these model syllabuses but no longer adhered strictly to it. But fake engineering colleges which sprang up in Delhi, UP, Bihar, Karnataka, Maharastra, Madhya pradesh just blew the syllabus like anything. Then, AICTE had to come up with strict measures to shut the colleges through rigid inspection in terms of syllabus, students, etc. Those who fail to stand the pressure gone down with progressive close down. Once a sprawling campus has now become go-down. Moreover, AICTE and MHRD are serious about the quality of education with rising numbers of engineering pass outs. It is often reported in newspapers that the students are of substandard quality with a lack of practical knowledge. Therefore, AICTE has come up with this model curriculum to sort out this problem. Let us discuss the salient points of the model syllabus.
(1) The number of credits is now 160 only: Previously, the students had to complete 220 credits. Now it has come down to 160 only. This means the number of subjects has reduced. The time freed will be utilized for a hackathon, laboratory, internships, etc.
(2) The curriculum is more focused on practical aspects of engineering through laboratory, workshop, internships, etc. Earlier, some colleges used to flout these by not having laboratories, workshops, or not sending students to internships. Hence, the students’ quality went to the drain. Moreover, it will give more ideas about the industrial environment. This will reduce the complaints of recruiters to some extent.
(3) The engineering students are to study Vedas, Puranas, and Shastras. In this time of zero logic and lack of spirituality in society, the government hopes to bring some sanity in the chaos.
(4) The engineering students are observed to be lacking in knowledge of the constitution. Without knowledge of the constitution, one can be considered ignorant of one’s rights. It helps one to be a better citizen of India. Moreover, Indians care little about the environment harming nature irreversibly all the time. Therefore, AICTE includes subjects on environmental science to sensitize students towards the issue of pollution.
The students should be aware of the course syllabus and curriculum. The course curriculum which includes rules and regulations of the 4-year course is very important. Though you are not required to know the whole curriculum, you are to know the rules regarding passing marks, class tests, credits of the subjects, calculation of SGPA & CGPA, rules regarding backlogs, internship rules, admission rules, the award of first-class based on CGPA, etc. When you know the things, you will be aware of the course and not fell into traps at the last of the years that you required this much of CGPA to secure to first-class and you are a few marks sort for not knowing the concept of CGPA and SGPA. Many times, students come running to the teachers for advice but it is too late. Be an informed person and stay away from any risk.Be a happy guy.
