When do people listen to you? (Job Series): 34

Have you observed that people do not listen to you when you say something? Why does it happen? It is because either you do not matter to them or your power is in decline. It is hard to digest, but it is true. Some can see it and change their course. It is the part and parcel of life. You cannot be relevant all the time, and the power goes away eventually. As a new employee, you will not have it immediately. After some time, you will have something. It takes time.

Well, people are smart. They sniff everything to the core. Once they assess that things are not right with you, they start jumping ship. People shift their way and adjust themselves as the situation evolves. You too did it so. Now, it is your time to face. People will come and go. Keeping sanity and integrity are the main issues. Face the situation like a man. Things go wrong, and they become okay after some time. It is how it is. Like everyone else, you will develop thick skin and move on. It is always like this. There is no point in being sour. At least, you will be able to identify the people in this process.

Whenever you have something, it is like people come running. Continuing in a humble manner or a measured approach through such sloppy waters helps to transition to a new phase. At the end, you must live in society amongst the wretched ones and betrayers.

If you like the post, you can read or gift the author's books “B.Tech Guidebook", "Campus Placement Guidebook", "PhD guidebook", and "Employee Guidebook" available worldwide in Amazon in Kindle format. Not in team!!! (Job Series): 33

Not in the team sounds great because it means less work. On the contrary, you may be missing an opportunity.

Most of the time, you are called for mundane work. You contribute and move on. It is the pedestal to land in something big in future. You are progressing slowly by contributing something at a time. During those interactions, people will create an image of you. How do you approach work? How do you solve a problem? Are you approachable? Do you have management skills? Can you get along with people?

If you are an average person, you will continue to move steadily forward. On the other hand, some people are extremely difficult to manage and unreliable; they will be pushed aside. It is like nature choosing the fittest in the process of selection.

Now, who are these people getting shunned? Some people talk a lot, but do nothing. People need doers, not talkers. Talkers are available in thousands. Whenever you approach such a person, you will hear long talks. People like the ones who actively participate. Work life is all about give and take. Well, I am saying it in a good sense. One should not take it otherwise. You give someone some time; you will reap something good in future. At the worst, you will have some learning.

While gathering a team for something important, you will be remembered. Due to your active participation in previous assignments, you will be roped in. This is going to be your juicy part of the affair, which will take you closer to something big. Before getting to do big things, you do lots of simple, mundane tasks.

Reliability is another characteristic that should be maintained during work life. Workplace works on the principle of reliability and hence, predictability. No one likes to have surprises. Your reliability saves everyone. You should understand that in workplaces, people do things in a disciplined manner. When you bring chaos, the whole process gets derailed.

It hampers others’ personal lives also. People may have other engagements after office hours. Due to your unreliability or indiscipline behaviour, others miss their engagements or leave home with stress. Over time, it accumulates, and people will gang up and push you to the corner. Therefore, one should not rock the system so violently that people just have had enough of you.

When you are in a team, you should not be someone who is backbiting everyone. It will bite you someday. Everyone can see whether someone is contributing or not. It should not be you all the time bringing it to everyone’s attention. It leaves a negative impression if you overdo it. Our lives are largely filled with such people around us. More importantly, you make lots of enemies.

Additive Manufacturing: Shaping the Future of Production

In a world rapidly embracing digital transformation, Additive Manufacturing (AM) — commonly known as 3D printing — has emerged as a game-changer in the manufacturing sector. This revolutionary process is not only reshaping how we design and produce objects but is also driving innovation across industries.

What is Additive Manufacturing?

Unlike traditional manufacturing, which often involves subtracting material (cutting, drilling, machining), additive manufacturing builds objects layer by layer from a digital 3D model. Materials such as plastics, metals, ceramics, and even biomaterials are used to create complex geometries with minimal waste.

Key Technologies in Additive Manufacturing

  1. Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM): Widely used for prototyping with thermoplastics.

  2. Stereolithography (SLA): Uses UV light to cure liquid resin into solid plastic.

  3. Selective Laser Sintering (SLS): Fuses powdered materials with a laser.

  4. Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS): Ideal for producing high-strength metal parts.

  5. Binder Jetting, Electron Beam Melting, and more: Each with unique applications and advantages.

Applications Across Industries

  • Aerospace: Lightweight, high-performance parts that reduce fuel consumption.

  • Healthcare: Custom prosthetics, implants, and even bioprinted tissues.

  • Automotive: Rapid prototyping, tooling, and small-batch parts.

  • Construction: 3D-printed houses and components.

  • Education & Research: Hands-on learning and innovative experimentation.

Benefits of Additive Manufacturing

  • Design Freedom: Create complex, customized geometries with ease.

  • Material Efficiency: Less waste compared to subtractive methods.

  • Reduced Lead Time: Fast transition from prototype to final product.

  • Cost-effective for Small Batches: No need for expensive molds or dies.

The Future of Additive Manufacturing

With advances in AI, machine learning, and materials science, AM is poised to become a cornerstone of Industry 4.0. From on-demand manufacturing to digital supply chains, the future is additive.

Prospects of Mechanical Engineering in Industry 4.0

Industry 4.0—often referred to as the fourth industrial revolution—marks a transformation in manufacturing and industrial practices through the integration of smart technologies such as IoT, AI, machine learning, robotics, additive manufacturing, and cyber-physical systems. Mechanical engineering, traditionally rooted in core concepts of mechanics, thermodynamics, and material science, is undergoing a paradigm shift to align with this digital revolution.

1. Enhanced Role through Digital Integration

Mechanical engineers are expected to collaborate more closely with software and data experts. Key areas include:

  • Digital Twin Technology: Creating real-time digital replicas of physical systems for predictive maintenance and optimization.

  • Smart Manufacturing: Designing systems that incorporate real-time feedback using sensors and actuators.

  • Cyber-Physical Systems: Developing machines and systems that interact seamlessly with humans and the digital world.

2. Interdisciplinary Skillsets

Mechanical engineers now need to be proficient in:

  • Data Analytics and AI: For predictive modeling, quality control, and process optimization.

  • Programming and Automation Tools: Python, MATLAB, PLCs, SCADA, etc.

  • Embedded Systems and IoT: For smart product development and condition monitoring.

3. Emerging Job Roles

Industry 4.0 is giving rise to several new job titles for mechanical engineers:

  • Mechatronics Engineer

  • Automation Engineer

  • Robotics Engineer

  • Additive Manufacturing Engineer

  • Digital Manufacturing Engineer

  • Industrial Data Analyst

  • Simulation & Modeling Expert

4. Application Domains

Mechanical engineers will play crucial roles in:
