Whenever you join a job, you will be given training. Many organizations do not train. New people learn on the go. So, one has to keep his eyes and ears open in the first few days. New things will come up at an overwhelming speed. Sometimes, people cannot process and feel burned out.
Many people have this wrong notion that after college, he or she will never pick a book but things keep happening in the opposite way. You have to learn new things to cope with the job. Therefore, one has to keep one's mind open to welcome new things. Resisting serves no purpose. Once, the learning phase is over, you will feel accustomed to the system. Till then, you have to struggle. For that matter, you have to pick a book related to topics taught in training. Sometimes, it will be from your background, and many times, they are not. Many become resentful that things are not from their field. The practical field has no boundary. You have to learn things that make money for the company. Sometimes, only a fraction of your knowledge will be useful. You have to keep in mind that companies are to make money and not to massage your ego about your knowledge.
Many of my friends joined a mining company after college. They were happy-go-lucky guys and liked to party. Once, they got campus placement, they felt elated. In their minds, they declared that all problems had vanished for good. They vowed to not pick a book in life. Soon, that attitude turned out to be very fatal.
They were given the task of observing and reporting a boiler that produced steam for the plant. They studied the boiler in their engineering syllabus and understood gauges for safe operation. One day, gauges showed high readings and they failed to read properly. The boiler went down. Failing to act on time had damaged the boiler. They had been fired from their jobs as it could have been far more dangerous for the plant.
Now, had they been cautious and kept an open mind to learn deeper whatever was taught in training, they could have saved the job. Therefore, one should pick a related book on their own or they can check vast online resources. Another reason for self-study is that people may forget things while training. One needs to understand that these are not trained teachers and they are just trainer. Digging deeper always helps to counter unseen problems which may come up in time.
You cannot just stop learning and keep doing something for life. You will be bored to death. Moreover, nowadays, things change really fast and you have to keep adapting to new things. Once, you stop upgrading and updating yourself, you may extinct like the dinosaurs.
