Communication is the lifeline in the corporate world or any other field. I have observed that in every area, everything boils down to communication. Talent does help to a certain level, but you need to have good communication skills beyond that. It pulls you down and never lets you move forward. Only a few people in society can break the chain and move forward. The Indian Prime Minister is one such example. He hailed from a humble background and reached the highest position due to his communication skill. He learned whatever needed to be learned. People used to comment on his English speaking skills in the early years, but he improved them a lot. Now, I don't see any problem with his speeches. Similarly, we have to improve too. The sooner it is, the better.
Let us take the example of Apple, one of the biggest technology companies worth three trillion dollars. Some countries' GDP is less than that. It was started by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne. You mostly hear about Steve Jobs all the time because books, films & documentaries are made on his life's achievement. On the other hand, Steve Wozniak was the main working brain behind the Mac computers. As an electronics engineer, he used to work in HP in the early years of his career and immersed himself in making calculators. Later on, he used his know-how in developing Apple computers. Steve Jobs identified his potential and started collaborating with him. While Steve jobs became the face of Apple, Wozniak was the leading R& D man. The rest is history. Steve Jobs was a great communicator, and people loved him. So, this shows that talent does help to some extent, and then one has to have good communication skills to go beyond that.
Ronnie Screwalla of UpGrad stresses the communication skills in his book called 'Skill it, Kill it: Up the Game'. He talked with many fellow peers and concluded that communication is vital because people will have to lead people and report to the top authority. In the process, some people outshine others and move up the ladder. Communication skill does help in this regard. Besides, one has to be emotionally intelligent. Emotionally intelligent people have great social skills. Additionally, they try to reason and take appropriate decisions on the job. Many researchers say that a person with average IQ but with high emotional intelligence has a high probability of excelling in the long run compared to an individual with a super high IQ. This is because he would utilize his emotional intelligence to achieve his goals. Developing communication skills is neither easy nor achieved overnight. One has to put some serious effort into this. There is no shortcut.
I hail from an Assamese medium background. There are many others like me. We are learning communication skill and continue to do so. One has to keep on practising it in day-to-day life in various ways. I have a friend who is a great communicator. I personally think that he is way above me. Due to many obligations, he was out of action for quite some time. Sometimes ago, when he was asked to give a talk, he seemed to be a little rusty. He was not the person. So, regular practice is the key to success. For interviews, the freshers have to develop themselves during their college days (You can check our articles in the below list on communication skills). In interviews, everybody knows that freshers do not have that many technical skills. Yet, they recruit them judging mostly on communication & leadership skills. They know that they will learn about the work in the job.
