Value Addition

What is value addition?

You have any kind of raw material. Then, you further process it to make a product out of it. The product will last longer. The product can be sold at a higher price, unlike the raw material. This process is called value addition.

It applies to everything. During your college life, you have to keep adding value to yourself. Then only, you will be suitable for a higher pay. Those who understand the concept keep investing their time in learning new things.

In India, students are said to be having very low skills or no skills to tackle modern-day jobs. Due to this, students find it difficult to get into the job market. Engineering students have to learn new tricks of trade apart from basic skills such as writing, presentation, and coding.

Every day, new things are coming; students need to keep an eye on those things. Nowadays, it is not difficult because of online resources. One can take online courses in UDEMY, COURSERA etc in their relevant field. Above all, one has to develop the mindset of ‘need to learn’ for a better future.

 Why is it so important?

If you want to follow the conventional route of getting jobs, you will have to enter a rat race. Otherwise, you can follow a different path and learn new things where there is no or little competition. There are such jobs. These jobs are for highly skilled people. The skills need to be honed over time. It is like sculpting which you cannot learn overnight. You have to give time to become an expert.

For conventional route goers, this route is closed. So, you can do things in your way and pace. Above all, such jobs are perceived as difficult and that is why, you can ask for a premium price for your service. People pay for difficult things.

Anger management

We all get angry at many things. It is normal. But, engaging in a quarrel or disrespecting others due to your hot temperament is no good. You become unpopular among people and branded as a quarrelsome, obstinate and uptight person which is not good in the long term. People become hesitant to deal with you and ultimately, you are isolated. There is no doubt that your competitive party will further inflate the rumours and make you untouchable. You will feel why people are so distant these days. In schools, colleges, or offices, it happens all the time. It is a dog-eat-dog world. We have competitors who are willing to displace us or replace us at any moment. If you constantly show such a hot temperament, it becomes a good opportunity for them.

In my school days, I came to know this. We engaged in silly fights or debates all the time. After such conflicts, you generally do not feel good. If the conflict is big and is unsolved for many days, the uncomfortable feeling stays for many days. Moreover, you just keep explaining the whole thing again and again before people. It just enhances the pain and suffering. People just need spicy talks and nothing else. So, I learned an important lesson to manage anger and not to engage in unnecessary conflicts.

There are some techniques which can be used in such sticky situations when you encounter an aggressive person. You have to be very patient not to give any ammunition to the other person’s canon. You keep calm and listen to what the other person is saying. You give a professional answer as per the situation and take a deep breath. Deep breathing helps to calm the mind.  After the encounter, you try to divert your attention to some other work and do not keep repeating things before an audience.  Generally, people take your words and add spice to further feed a larger audience. On your part, you should play it as a small affair and let the issue roll on its own. You are to protect your image. If you maintain a calm and quiet demeanour, the other person will be automatically looked upon as an aggressor.

Strategy to Write a Paper during PhD:10

Research papers are essential for PhD degree awards. Every University or organization has their own set of criteria regarding research papers. So, one needs to check it once registered as a PhD student in that institution because research papers take time to write and then get published

Generally, students get stuck in a PhD for many years due to non-publication. You have to show some publications along with your thesis at the time of submission of your thesis. Otherwise, there is a strong possibility of getting the thesis rejected by the thesis reviewer on submission. They tend not to believe the findings stated in the thesis and keep on suggesting new things. Once verified research articles back you, you can stand your ground.

Generally, there are two kinds of research papers; the ones indexed in SCOPUS & Web of Science and approved by the UGC CARE list. I strongly tend to endorse SCOPUS & Web of Science journals as the UGC CARE list keeps on changing very frequently. Sometimes, during submission, it will be in the list and then it will vanish at an advanced stage of publication. I happened to have such an incident and I had to get it cancelled for publication. Again, I had to submit it to another journal. In that process, I had lost about 6 months. Well, I learned an important lesson of sticking to the reputed ones.

Some journals get delisted from the indexing services but in the case of SCOPUS, they maintain a database so there is no problem. Then, there is a concept of impact factor in the case of the journals. The journals with high impact factors are very much reputed ones. Therefore, they have high standards and a long waiting list. Many journals have a waiting list of 1 to 2 years once the article is accepted.

Web of Science journals are categorized as SCI and ESCI journals. Initially, the Institute developed the Science Citation Index (SCI) for Scientific Information (ISI) and now Clarivate Analytics maintains it. The SCI journals are highly valued for their standards in academic circles. The Emerging Science Citation Index (ESCI) journals are junior to SCI journals. They are in the process and have not reached the stage yet. Most of the time, they are respectable journals accepted by the institutions and there is no problem.

Different people apply different approaches during their PhD. In the initial days of PhD, I used to write review papers because I was setting my project in the right direction. Then, later phase of the project, I kept publishing partially my research findings. It solved the problem of my minimum requirement of papers via review papers and partial research finding papers. Besides, it increased my number of papers because you need numbers while applying for a job.

On the other hand, one of my colleagues who was doing a PhD in Computer science from a premier institute had to solve three problems related to the topic. While addressing those problems, she had to write papers individually addressing the problems. It was far more difficult compared to my case. Well, every institution has its own rules.

In many cases, book chapters also help but you have to check the institution’s PhD regulations. So, PhD regulation of that institution should be read and reread. Generally, book chapters or conference presentations with the facility of extended paper publications should be considered for registering one’s idea if he or she is working in a competitive field. Moreover, many people use conferences as a networking ground to connect people because you need to provide a list of reviewers while submitting an article to a journal. Well, I have not done that but people do. If your writing and the content are superb, you do not need people to know you. Generally, science people value content at the end of the day.
