The world has become performance-based. Jobs have become performance-based like never before. People are assessed strictly for promotion. In our parents' time, it was not like this. People had quiet lives and used to go at a certain pace. There was not much stress.

In jobs, employers have set certain parameters based on which they will assess the performance. In Indian banks, one has to appear in exams to get promoted to higher posts. Similarly, in higher education, the teachers must reach a certain threshold for each promotion through academic and research activities. At least in the education sectors, the parameters are well defined. If one is a diligent worker, it should not be a problem. So, the out of college does not mean bidding adieu to studies. It continues. 

When an employee attains the requisite criteria only then the person is considered. Otherwise, one has to wait infinitely. Many people have fallen victim to it due to ignorance. At times, you will feel that getting the job was rather easy than maintaining it. As others keep moving, you feel stuck and pressure increases. 

Adding to the problem, now a days, the AI software has taken over evaluation . Slowly, all employers are adopting these toys. The software understands only set criteria and parameters. Even a simple deviation would not be recognized by it for consideration.As human intervention does not exist, it has become faceless obstruction.

Often, a new employee is ignorant about these things and so, learns it in a hard way. In the corporate world, it is far messy compared to government sector jobs. One has to keep in mind that, it is profitable for the employers to keep you in lower posts. Then, there is politics and all kinds of ‘oiling’ & ‘buttering’ by the competitors. One has to be observant of the things around him or her. However, one has to keep moving. Good things happen when you keep doing something.

With great power comes great responsibility. Do you remember this dialogue from the Spider-Man movie? Well, it is right even though I am exaggerating a little bit here in terms of jobs. On the contrary, you get little power and lots of work!  

Once, you join, you are given a few responsibilities to perform. If you can perform finely, you get promoted. You should not do anything stupid to spoil this set-up. I remember one incident regarding this. Many of my friends were recruited by a mining company. In the earlier days of probation, they were given the duty to look after a boiler. A boiler is a vessel which produces steam. Steam can be used for many purposes even for power production in thermal power plants. So, it involves high heat and pressure. My friend’s duty was to monitor various gauges of the boiler such as pressure and temperature. In simple words, the gauges’ indicators should not be in the red zone. It was their responsibility. They took it casually and ignored it in their senseless banter. The system went down and so were their careers in simple terms. They were fired because of their casualness.

Of late, the jobs have become very demanding. People have to put lots of hours and energy into the job because they have been given a responsibility. In these days of artificial intelligence, people want work from people like computers. Anyhow, you have to bear your responsibility.   In the earlier days of the job, you will be given even irrelevant work. It happens in every organization. One has to accept that and should not start to be a crybaby. There have been talented people before you and after you also. One should not think oneself very precious in earlier days because there are thousands lining up to replace you anyway. Over the years, when you become intelligent through various exposures, you become intelligent. But, again, one should not think of himself/ herself as the god who knows the ultimate truth.  You will get there in due course of time. Until then, you need to chill.

As you go up the ladder, you keep accumulating power in small doses. Higher authorities are also very cautious about granting you power. The power comes with great responsibility. You will be the reporting person on account of your team or the unit. So, it is not easy. If you do not have the support of the team or unit, you are just waiting to be fired. It is as simple as that. Generally, a slow progression to the top helps to gain experience about the process or the system. Since you are not a parachute candidate, you have a better chance of acceptability in the organization because of your beginning from the grassroots level. It humbles a person. Assuming a position with some power does not mean delegating people to do this and that which is shown in films. It is beyond that. It is about responsibility and the people whom you lead.
