In the office, we spend much of our time with colleagues—sometimes for many years. As a result, friendly banter often develops among those who are comfortable with one another.
However,
not everyone enjoys this kind of banter. People come from different backgrounds,
with varying social norms and values. Approaching everyone with the same
playful attitude may not work and can even create problems.
Some
individuals enjoy making jokes at others but dislike being the target of jokes
themselves. Such people may become offended or even aggressive. To maintain
harmony, it helps to be flexible—enjoy a harmless joke on yourself if you enjoy
joking with others.
Now, while joking, I suggest that one should
leave a few touchy topics such as religion, caste, etc. These types of topics
always hurt inner feelings of people. There are a lot of ways to crack a joke
without hurting the feelings of others. Besides, one should not try to be a
jester in the first meeting with someone. Otherwise, people tend to take you
lightly. Once the person is comfortable with you to a certain degree, you can
proceed. How will you know that? You will be able to sense that from the
behavior.
