“Tell me about yourself / Introduce yourself” ( T & P series on Wednesdays : 17)

An interview is like a cricket match. If you have a nice head start, you maximize the probability of winning the match. A solid head start is also very crucial in interviews. You may accomplish it by smartly introducing yourself.  While introducing yourself or telling about yourself, you are to consider the following points. As a newcomer, these considerations are critical. You can create a template if you include all of the criteria. However, the template may change company to company according to job profile with small variations in the hobby, interests, and relevant work experiences.

(1) Start with your name

It is important to know that you have already provided the resume before the interview and they will be flipping the pages right in front of you while doing the interview. You can begin by saying, “As you know, my name is Gopal Saikia,” because they have your name already and then you are to move on to the next point.

(2)  State your district and state.

Right after the name, you can indicate that you belong to X district and Z state. If providing minor information such as the village, taluk, block, and so on does not help in any meaningful manner, it should be avoided. If your place is well-known for something, you can mention it. However, you must be prepared to answer a few questions about it. If you believe it will cause more problems than it would solve, you should avoid it.

(3) State your latest education.

Many people begin with basic school and work their way up to the highest level of schooling. This frustrates the interviewers since they are pressed for time. They've probably already conducted twenty interviews before you and want to do another twenty after you. Therefore, one should not include unnecessary information. You may be asking what we should do in such a situation. You may, however, discuss your most recent two degrees. If you are an engineering graduate, you can discuss your most recent degree, which could be a bachelor of engineering or a bachelor of technology. That's all there is to it; nothing further should be added unnecessarily. One should always try to be objective and less dragging.

(4) Include your hobbies & interests

You should understand that hobbies are a good conversation starter. Therefore, you should include a few hobbies while introducing yourself. Because the purpose of the activity is to learn about yourself and your personality. Your hobbies reveal a lot about you. You should not, however, state anything that you have never done as a pastime. Many people prefer to float anything that comes to mind, and they ultimately spill their beans when they are grilled more. That should not be the case. When speaking, one should be truthful.

(5) Don’t forget about work experience.

Many recent graduates lack job experience. However, if you can gain some job experience, it is a huge plus. You should provide information about your job experience.

You now understand all of the elements to cover while introducing yourself. If you are smart enough, you can drop certain clues to sway your interview in your favor. It is like an ambush in a good sense. You guide them to the image you wish to present to them. However, your fluency will greatly matter during the interview. Even though people prepare these things, they are unable to deliver when the time comes. To avoid this, you must prepare over and again.  I had this problem during my college days. Then, I thought that I should overcome it. So I practiced it hundreds of times in my head until it was firmly imprinted in my mind, and I never had such difficulty after that.  This was useful when I was working as a paid intern at Dalkia Energy Services in New Delhi. Every day, I had to meet new individuals and introduce myself to them several times. At that point, I thanked myself for my timely preparation.
