Striking a conversation(Job Series):04

In jobs, you will have assignments to work in a team. Sometimes, the team will be well-known to you. Working in such an environment is not that difficult. Then, sometimes, the teammates will be strangers. As an employee working on government assignments, we are frequently sent to places never seen in life and meet people totally strangers. Working in such places with such unknown people, you will feel yourself in strange waters. But, others are also bound by their duty and so, somehow things get by. Sometimes, it is an exceptional experience and most of the time, it is just below average which leaves a hell of a scare. In private jobs, you will not have such experiences at least with the teammates.

In such situations, you have to quickly establish a workable relationship. For that matter, you have to be flexible, kind and humble. While striking up a conversation, you can start with a regular job description and slowly discuss their family background. Sometimes, people do not like to share but most of the time people want to talk about their places, homes and family. Their facial expressions light up. You cannot expect someone to be a hardcore expert on international affairs which you see all the time in your YouTube playlist. 

Generally, experience plays an important role in developing such social skills. If somebody is from a farming family, you can ask about farming in their local area. It is just a template. You have to keep on improvising while talking with different members of the team. Off late, we limit ourselves to our domain. As one progresses, one has to develop some workable knowledge of finance, politics, technology, history, culture, local area, geography etc. 

While striking the conversation, you should not be someone who knows everything and delivers sermons. Rather than developing a rapport, it will repel people and make you a laughing stock. There should be a subtle touch.

People hate you when you are having the slightest bit of happiness. I have seen it and experienced it. Once in a while, everyone has his moments of joy, even if your life is too much worked up. I think that one needs his share of happiness. Now a day, you share your joy via social media. Sometimes, you can learn a lot about things from these types of social media posts. If someone is visiting some place and is sharing something online, you come to know of the things. Thus, the knowledge percolates. This is the positive thinking you expect but things go in a different direction. People become unhappy seeing you happy and give back all the nasty treatment you deserve for sharing!!! One of my friends keeps sharing photos, and people are after him for his leisure moments. Actually, people are all overworked. They have long separated ways from happiness. All that is left is responsibilities and unhappiness. My take is that responsibilities are important. Without them, you will have nothing left to do. You will be bored to death. One needs to think this way also. So, one needs to accommodate others also in their lives.

As an employee, I learned it in the early stages, but once in a while, I make mistakes. Then, I face outrageous remarks regarding anything with no correlation. Since then, I have stopped sharing things. Once in a while, I share food photos, which should have unique criteria to be picked and flowers online, yet there is no respite from the people because you have itch to share. Well, ignoring is the way out, which can be done on one’s end or you can just stop sharing. Now, if you are such a person, who does not have a good word for the person, you should keep quiet. You do not need to crash gate other people’s happiness. My take in this regard is “Live and let live.” You are no one to judge. If you are unhappy with your life or other’s happiness, keep it to yourself. Expressing your thoughts will make you unlikable among spheres. It is a ruthless world. You may find repercussions in another form for your loose mouth. If you cannot accept others, you will not be also accepted. It is as simple as that.

In offices, people do not like to be advised. This is what I have understood so far. If you are working with people and trying to suggest something regarding their things, people may become irritated with you. I have seen someone who always has a word of advice for everyone in every matter. People just started getting repelled by his behaviour. We all have a god complex more or less. When somebody advises us it just hurts our complex.

On the other hand, this is our god complex which keeps us itching to advise somebody. To advise somebody, are we capable? Even if it is in the interest of the person, only, a few can think beyond and take it positively. For that, one has to have good emotional intelligence and a broad mind.

Generally, if people need advice, they will come seeking and get it from a worthy one anyway. Unless you are a professional consultant, you should not keep throwing yourself. Thirsty will come to the well. If somebody thinks that you are somebody who can help with the knowledge, they will seek your advice. Till then, you need to listen only. Most of the time, people need listeners only. They already have made up their mind while sharing with you. Anyway, people need validation of their decisions most of the time. They will continue in their queer way. It is the most common pattern. Many a time, you will find people who will entangle you in their petty affairs. You will give session after session to such a person. Eventually, they will waste a lot of your precious time. One should not be stuck up in such traps. If someone is intelligent, he or she will pick up immediately and work on it.
