Sometimes, it is good to be not placed!!!

When you reach the 7th semester in B.Tech, you are under pressure to get a job in campus placement. We were too under tremendous pressure to get a job in our college days. We appeared for various companies private and PSUs alike. We prepared for written tests, group discussions, and personal interviews. After appearing in some PSUs we lost interest in appearing. There were a few reasons. The preparations for different companies were different and required a lot of time. This hampered normal studies. I was worried that this would lower my percentage. One should maintain a good percentage for future opportunities. Therefore, I gave up appearing in job interviews and continued my studies wholeheartedly. Furthermore, I kept preparing for various entrance tests. Luckily, I did well in the Tezpur University entrance test and got a call. I was elated and took that chance. That was a good decision. If you can, one needs to explore the world. I did M.Tech and am on the verge of completion of a Ph.D. I met so many people in life and gathered so many experiences. Due to my studies &  conferences, I often visited so many places. These were nice experiences. Sometimes, it is good to be not placed.

Training in the times of COVID

Training or internship is mandatory in B.Tech as per AICTE. Generally, one viva is arranged either in the 7th semester or the 8th semester. You have to appear the viva with a report. In the report, you write about the processes or machines of the visited industry or factory or research organization. Due to COVID, we are stuck inside houses. You have missed the training or it is delayed. The training period in various organizations has almost passed as the summer is coming to an end. The problem will come when you have to submit the report along with the certificate in the viva. As you cannot go for training physically, you can do some online courses related to mechanical engineering. You can do various courses on designing (Autocad,) and programming (C, Python, Java, CNC, Arduino,) immediately online. There are some reputed sites where you can do courses. These are listed below.

(1) Coursera

(2) EDX

(3) Swayam

(4) Udemy

You will get a certificate upon completion of the course with the payment of nominal fees. These courses are offered by reputed universities like Havard, MIT, Carnegie, Colombia University, etc. Swayam is an Indian platform. The government of India is pushing online education in massive ways. You can avail of the facility of the courses there also. These certificates can be easily translated to internships looking at the pandemic condition. For more articles related to B.Tech, you can have the eBook available on amazon.

Developing writing habit early in B.Tech

One should develop a writing habit as early as possible. In India, English is spoken and written widely throughout the country. Mastering the language works wonders in life. Due to our poor English education in schools, we are left with half-backed English knowledge. We can write correctly but cannot speak. While writing also, there are a few people who can express what they are thinking. Many students taking admissions in B.Tech are from mother-tongue medium schools. They take time to get used to it. But, precious time is lost. One should work very hard to learn the language. If you have mastered the language, you should try writing research papers in B.Tech. Now a day, you are awarded some marks if you present papers in conferences or write articles in peer review journals. Writing paper helps in higher studies like M.Tech and Ph.D. In your higher studies, you have to write many reports and present papers at conferences. In Ph.D., you have to write papers in good journals that are indexed in Scopus, the web of science, UGC care list, etc. Without papers, you won’t get a degree even if you complete your time or surpass your time. You can check out more articles like these in the eBook titled “ B.Tech Guide book”

Future of B.Tech students post COVID era

COVID pandemic shows no sign of slowing down. There is very little chance of having a vaccine by the end of the year in India. Probably, we may not have a vaccine at all. This pandemic has made the lives of millions miserable. We are stuck at home. Offices and factories are closed down. The market is slowing down. The economy is in shambles. It will take time to revive the economy. My intuition says it will take at least two years.

Students’ lives have also become miserable. The worst hits are the final year students in every engineering course. The placements have been low due to slowing Indian economy this year. Then, the COVID has struck down every hope. But, everything is not lost. There is an option of higher studies open. Looking at the pandemic situation, it is better to prepare for higher studies at home with study materials. You can go for M.Tech, MS, or MBA.  In my college days, we collected “Made it Easy” correspondence courses. People go to New Delhi for coaching also. Now a day, I do not know whether that study material is up to the mark or not. You need to consult with your seniors or those who have completed such courses. There are online courses also. You have to be very motivated to do such a course. I have seen that people are really pumped up at first and then lose patience. You have to stick to it to the end. At last, I would say “Self-help is the best help”/ “God helps those help themselves”. For interesting insights into B.Tech life, you can buy the eBook.

How to prepare for a job interview?

After clearing the written test for a particular job, one is asked to appear before a panel for a job interview. Generally, industry experts of field experts sit in the panel. These are experts in their field doing jobs for years. Impressing them is difficult but not impossible. Some people can crack personal interviews in the first attempt and some people may take time. One should remember that failure is the pillar of success. One should not get disheartened by one setback. Rather, he should consider that he has inched one step towards success.

When preparing for the job interview, you should always check the profile of the company or industry. Before going to the interview, one should check the background of the company/ industry. One can check the company website and pick up all related data. Furthermore, you need to know the working field of the company. One should ponder over the probable questions to be asked from the field. Let, a company has a factory. The factory produces a certain car part. You need to know the machinery utilized in the factory and the use of the part in the car. You can further broaden your preparation for the working of the car and theories related to it. If you prepare like this, you won’t have difficulty in answering any technical questions. Apart from that, you should check online whether some other person has appeared for such jobs in the past. You will get the question answers from various websites. Sometimes, these question answers give valuable inputs for your preparations. But, one should not rely on the answers given on the online portals. These may be wrong . One should verify the answers from the textbooks.

For the interview panel experts, it is always wise to prepare a few subjects as favorite subjects. You should be comfortable with these subjects. Your fundamental concepts regarding these subjects should be crystal clear. While taking up favorite subjects, one should mind that these subjects are core to your course. One should not take up easy non-related subjects. The interviewers are people with experience. They may ask practical questions. One should be prepared to answer these questions. Only, laboratory and workshops help in this regard. You can have more such important articles in the eBook down below.
