Types of PhD: 02

 (Source: pexels.com)

There are two types of PhD programs; one is called regular in which one needs to be in the campus all the time and the other one is called part time program in which the students work remotely after being assigned to a guide.

If you are getting scholarship then you have to be a regular Ph.D student residing at the campus. You will be assigned some work during your stint at the campus. These works are academic in nature and helps to build some academic experience. On the other hand, part time Ph.D is suitable for working professional who cannot stay in the campus and can do the work remotely.

There is a general notion that regular students are able to finish the course early compared to part time one who can visit his /her guide occasionally. Some works needs to be done at campus under supervision of guide.

Ph.D Eligibility: 01

If you are a studious guy, Ph.D may be the last phase of educational journey. After graduation and masters in a particular field, you become eligible to enroll into a PhD. program. In India, there are central educational institutes (like IITs, IISc etc), central universities, state universities, reserch organizations under central or state government which offer Ph.D in different fields.   For top central institutes, you must clear entrance exams like GATE in case of engineering stream. Once you have GATE, it becomes easy and you get a nice scholarship for many years. The scholarship money is sufficient for a student living in a hostel.

For universities, one can take two routes; one through GATE and other through appearing university entrance test. In central universities, you will get scholarship if you have GATE but this may not be a case in state university or other such organizations. You must bear your expenses.

Companies do not support R & D activities

Earning in India is difficult. No doubt as per GOI, if any one earns more than 25 thousand per months is considered rich in India which is 10% of total population. Now, see this is 2023 and we are to hear this. I did not want to believe it. I started to see people around me. Then, I found this is true. In India, it is difficult to do business. Last year, we were doing a consultancy project. The project was completed on time and the company wanted to give a new project. Last time when we quoted the expenses for the project, we were doing it at a loss for having an experience (That was our Jio offer). This time we needed to cover our expenses and needed to earn something as we were investing our time for studies and weekends for field visits.  They just ditched us and stopped approaching us. Looking at the company of such a size doing business for considerable time, we were surprised to see their unwillingness pay the bare minimum for traveling and other overheads. We too stopped communicating. This instance has taught me two lessons.
(1) It is difficult to earn and do business in India.
(2) Companies do not support R & D activities.
As companies do not do R & D activities, they run it with conventional wisdom and lacks competitive advantage. That is why when profit margin goes down, they run away by selling their stake to someone. Above all, I was so surprised that the highly trained MBA people running the show in the company were unable to spot it.
