Collaboration during PhD to Write a Research Paper:11

Sometimes, a PhD project becomes very complex. One needs help in many regards. Therefore, seeking help is not an issue. Besides, one can collaborate with others to publish great research articles since it increases diversity and gives richness to the content.

According to my opinion, one should not bring help to solve his or her core research problem. Once, you bring in someone, you are to share the authorship of the research paper with the people. So, one should be careful. Many people take help and do not give authorship. It is considered very selfish behaviour on the part of you and increases animosity amongst your collaborators. I have seen such instances and people hate each other to the core like sworn enemies.

Generally, it is safe to collaborate on side issues related to the topic to increase the number of papers for your case.  You have to find good people who are willing to collaborate on such a project. In such cases, there should be a clear division of work among the collaborators because it is very much required for many journals to submit the contribution list. In such a case, you can always manage and you need not be in a straitjacket. You just need to talk with your partners regarding load sharing and sort out the authorship order. That is it.

Additionally, one has to be very careful to choose partners because some people are very lazy and steal content from online resources. So, you need to be extra careful regarding plagiarism these days. I have seen students picking content from others and submitting it to journals. Later on, those articles are needed to be pulled out. In the process, the other collaborators' names also get destroyed. I presume many journals blacklist such authors. So, one should not believe others blindly.

Strategy to Write a Paper during PhD:10

Research papers are essential for PhD degree awards. Every University or organization has their own set of criteria regarding research papers. So, one needs to check it once registered as a PhD student in that institution because research papers take time to write and then get published

Generally, students get stuck in a PhD for many years due to non-publication. You have to show some publications along with your thesis at the time of submission of your thesis. Otherwise, there is a strong possibility of getting the thesis rejected by the thesis reviewer on submission. They tend not to believe the findings stated in the thesis and keep on suggesting new things. Once verified research articles back you, you can stand your ground.

Generally, there are two kinds of research papers; the ones indexed in SCOPUS & Web of Science and approved by the UGC CARE list. I strongly tend to endorse SCOPUS & Web of Science journals as the UGC CARE list keeps on changing very frequently. Sometimes, during submission, it will be in the list and then it will vanish at an advanced stage of publication. I happened to have such an incident and I had to get it cancelled for publication. Again, I had to submit it to another journal. In that process, I had lost about 6 months. Well, I learned an important lesson of sticking to the reputed ones.

Some journals get delisted from the indexing services but in the case of SCOPUS, they maintain a database so there is no problem. Then, there is a concept of impact factor in the case of the journals. The journals with high impact factors are very much reputed ones. Therefore, they have high standards and a long waiting list. Many journals have a waiting list of 1 to 2 years once the article is accepted.

Web of Science journals are categorized as SCI and ESCI journals. Initially, the Institute developed the Science Citation Index (SCI) for Scientific Information (ISI) and now Clarivate Analytics maintains it. The SCI journals are highly valued for their standards in academic circles. The Emerging Science Citation Index (ESCI) journals are junior to SCI journals. They are in the process and have not reached the stage yet. Most of the time, they are respectable journals accepted by the institutions and there is no problem.

Different people apply different approaches during their PhD. In the initial days of PhD, I used to write review papers because I was setting my project in the right direction. Then, later phase of the project, I kept publishing partially my research findings. It solved the problem of my minimum requirement of papers via review papers and partial research finding papers. Besides, it increased my number of papers because you need numbers while applying for a job.

On the other hand, one of my colleagues who was doing a PhD in Computer science from a premier institute had to solve three problems related to the topic. While addressing those problems, she had to write papers individually addressing the problems. It was far more difficult compared to my case. Well, every institution has its own rules.

In many cases, book chapters also help but you have to check the institution’s PhD regulations. So, PhD regulation of that institution should be read and reread. Generally, book chapters or conference presentations with the facility of extended paper publications should be considered for registering one’s idea if he or she is working in a competitive field. Moreover, many people use conferences as a networking ground to connect people because you need to provide a list of reviewers while submitting an article to a journal. Well, I have not done that but people do. If your writing and the content are superb, you do not need people to know you. Generally, science people value content at the end of the day.

Two people, two lessons regarding interviews

I keep in touch with my friends and former students. Whenever we meet, we talk about recruitment trends and share various insights. In this post, I will talk about two important lessons from two different people.

One fine day, one of my friends informed me that he was going to appear in an interview at a college. The college is not far away from where I am staying currently. It was an administrative post. After the interview, we met and had a cup of tea. I asked him about the interview questions. He kept on talking about the questions and answers which he gave. Then, he told me that they were asking about the college campus and its various infrastructures. He had nothing to answer because he did not think of those types of questions. In the case of administrative roles, generally, people ask such questions. Probably, one looks for alertness and keen intent to work for the organization. I have seen these types of questions asked in engineering personal interviews also. So, the right way to address such a situation is to prepare a small note about the organization and its rich history. Besides, one should also know about its various departments, ancillaries, offshoots etc. A good grip on various grants or projects which the organization is receiving from the government in case of a government entity or doing on behalf of the government is a must. Eventually, he did not get the job. That day, I had somehow guessed it because I saw many people failing in that part before him and also in that organization. He learned the lesson the hard way. Therefore, a background check about the visiting entity is a must in case of interviews.

The second story is related to a student from my institution. The student was an average one. As per teachers, she could not express herself in the lab viva voce. However, she did exceptionally well in a tough job interview in her core sector. It was a surprise to everyone. Then, every student who gets recruited gives feedback. In that feedback session, she was asked about her transition. She said that she watched YouTube videos of mock interviews such as UPSC, banking etc. She learned how to handle interview sessions through such videos. She practiced herself many times considering different situations. Now, here she used an important concept taught in “Brain Rules” book; if you put yourself in an exam-like situation before an exam, you become confident and do well. She put herself adequately in different interview scenarios and was ready for the occasion. When the opportunity came, it was an easy pick. So, one can rehearse theater artists to perform before the audience. Therefore, if you keep on preparing that way, you are destined to perform well.
