Starting in a new place (Job series):01

When you go to a new place to join a job, it is challenging to adjust for a few days. Many cannot cope with it and leave for good. These people are homesick and cannot be convinced to stay on. Everything is not everyone. Besides, everyone has different hopes and dreams. So, anyone is free to chase their dream. But one has to be clear not to spend too much time chasing only dreams. Beyond dreams, there is real life where you earn and make a living. It does not seem to be glamorous but it is life. It has been always like this.

Being new to a new place, you may feel lonely. Your festivals and holidays will be different. You will sometimes feel alienated from the society. But you have to make a decision regarding one question and that is “Why are you here?”. If you are for making money, then it should solve all your problems. Everyone does not get what they wish to have.  They may get it if they want to work tremendously hard. Do we do that? Most of the time, the answer is no. So, we have to be content with what we have on our plate. If you want to change the fate, you are free to change it. But, being sorry for your choices and inability, you become sour and blame others for your misfortunes. That should not happen. If you are having fun and end up in this situation, you should respect that and continue with it to mend the choices in future. There is no end. You can always change and mend your way and have what you want to have. It is just you and only you. One of the greatest philosophers of the 20th century Jean Paul Satre said that our life is like an empty page and whatever we fill this page with it, we become just like this. So, everything is in our hands good or bad.

So, being a new employee, you may feel lonely and overworked and genuinely want to ditch the job, but you continue with it. For every job, there is a steep curve of learning. Once, you are through it you become pretty much comfortable with it. Generally, five years in a particular job makes one perfect in his operations. So, one has to be patient like the saying “Rome was not built in a day.”

Some 10 to 15 years ago, students from far-flung states wanted to go to Bangalore, Chennai etc. to study engineering.  It caused the rapid establishment of engineering colleges in those states. In those days, they used to have hundreds of colleges in states. Some were exceptionally good and some were very shady. They scammed students. There were wild stories regarding those admissions. When students reach college, it is nothing. Since then, AICTE has been very vigilant. They brought many rules and regulations to counter this issue. Now, engineering in India is a regulated space and I hear no such stories.

With the development of the Indian economy, the Indian people have become wealthy. Mostly, the upper middle class is very aspirational. They work very hard and want to spend money on students’ education. I have come across people who are spending with both hands to send their students abroad. Many people are drawing money from their pension funds jeopardizing the future to send their children. Now, it is not a problem if the student is decently talented but a race is going on. The students are also trying to go abroad sometimes by taking irrelevant courses. Frankly speaking, the Western countries are not growing and they only want students to keep fuelling their educational business economy. It is not like the old days when the countries would allow you to work there. With each passing day, they have made rules and regulations such that it is challenging to get a work visa. Even if you get jobs, these are mostly in petrol pumps, grocery stores etc. Moreover, in many countries, many scams are going on.  Clueless, students get duped by scamsters. They end up in the streets and die. Therefore, going abroad for the sake of going abroad is no good.

People always say that there are no jobs. Jobs are there. And people are getting it all the time. One has to devote time to learning some practical skills. Most of the people run away by hearing this. There has to be some effort from our side. Moreover, there is a process of learning. You start from the basics and then go on to solve a complex problem. Nowadays, people want to start from the end. Nobody can teach you that way.
