After many years of service, I have done many assignments in groups. As an experienced person, my assessment is that teamwork is just an illusion. Most of the work is done by a few members and the rest of the members just piggy ride on them. It is what I saw in my case but it may vary according to culture to culture and country to country.
Well, many people in the team think that they would equally contribute but practically it does not happen. As the deadline approaches, someone in the team whoever is more responsible chickens out and does the job and the rest just enjoy the fruit.
Over time, the member who contributes more becomes a grumpy man as he takes most of the responsibility. It fills his mind with all kinds of negativity towards the team. Well, this is the truth. If you are a contributing member, you need not worry much because someone always keeps track of everything. People can lobby and get things by sweet talks but they cannot bring competitiveness & efficiency to the table. It is acquired by hard work and rigorous grinding. Sooner or later, people have to pick you up because they have no option but to select the competent one. People who talk much are for show but for practical things, you get the people who are expert. In my service life, I have experienced it. Even the ones from whom you do not expect anything will field you because of your completeness. It seems odd but everyone wants things well managed below them. So, whenever, you find yourself in such a situation of working alone, you think that you are working for yourself and nothing else. It is the truth.
