Neither good nor bad (Job Series): 24

In offices, people come from different backgrounds. They may be diverse in language, culture, ethnicity or come what may be, they are all similar in one aspect which is self-interest. People are driven by it and always will be. Anyone who wishes to think otherwise is free to think. The outside world is not as rosy as we think.

Many people try to take moral high grounds regarding it but everyone has a weak point. Sooner or later, everyone conforms to the surrounding human folks. Whenever interests align people find themselves on good terms with others. As soon as it vanishes, the common ground also disappears. Many feel lonely in this complex world. One needs to be mentally strong to endure such things and keep going.

 
Hence, I have mentioned that these days, the people around us are neither good nor bad. It is just grey. To mingle with the folks, one has to keep these things in mind. You cannot get anything done unless and until you make him count thousands of benefits out of that choice. 

Many a time, you might find it pretty useless. It is how you navigate these days.

After many years of service, I have done many assignments in groups. As an experienced person, my assessment is that teamwork is just an illusion. Most of the work is done by a few members and the rest of the members just piggy ride on them. It is what I saw in my case but it may vary according to culture to culture and country to country.

Well, many people in the team think that they would equally contribute but practically it does not happen. As the deadline approaches, someone in the team whoever is more responsible chickens out and does the job and the rest just enjoy the fruit.

Over time, the member who contributes more becomes a grumpy man as he takes most of the responsibility. It fills his mind with all kinds of negativity towards the team. Well, this is the truth. If you are a contributing member, you need not worry much because someone always keeps track of everything. People can lobby and get things by sweet talks but they cannot bring competitiveness & efficiency to the table. It is acquired by hard work and rigorous grinding. Sooner or later, people have to pick you up because they have no option but to select the competent one. People who talk much are for show but for practical things, you get the people who are expert. In my service life, I have experienced it. Even the ones from whom you do not expect anything will field you because of your completeness. It seems odd but everyone wants things well managed below them. So, whenever, you find yourself in such a situation of working alone, you think that you are working for yourself and nothing else. It is the truth.

When you hold a post, you are given some responsibility by the organization and by default, you command some power however it may be small. For most people who do not have a fulfilling life, their job and their positions are their identity.  As time progresses, you move up and your position solidifies. You command greater power and so you make a lot of impact in others’ lives through your decisions. People look up to you for your grace as well as mercy when they are wrong.

Power is like opium. It takes time to get off. Many people get addicted to it and start thinking of themselves as the god. History is filled with such instances. During those days, people tended to behave in a way that was not normal to society. Slowly, people get away from the righteous path of truth.

Sooner or later, power always wanes by various means.  It is not permanent. Sometimes, you get old or sometimes you are just replaced by someone more efficient than you. It is a part of life. We are all replaceable. Humans are nothing. People around you will support you as long as they can benefit from it. Once, they feel that they cannot do so they will throw it like a disposable glass. Most of the time, people are not ready to accept reality, they feel uncomfortable getting back to normalcy. It is what it is. Then, people are surprised to see the very people who sang praises till yesterday will turn against you once you hang up your boots. Humans are selfish beings but the irony is that you are to live amongst them knowing the irony. That is the biggest irony.
