Choosing a guide for your PhD:05

Many a time, students are familiar with the people at the teaching positions. If you have done masters from the same institute, it will be easy to contact a guide. Problem arises when you are applying someplace which is new to you. In that case, you are totally in new waters. Now, there are techniques to develop relationships and rapport. In such case, students are advisable to develop familiarity through conferences and workshops or other social media medium such as LinkedIn. You have to showcase your talent and intent for research and development. Your participation in such brain stimulating sessions will definitely bring the attention. If you are unable to do anything as such, you have to prepare hard for the interview round. Generally, interview panel asks you that whom you want to approach as guide. If you have already reached the concerned person, your interview round becomes a bit comfy. Otherwise, you have to be satisfied with what you get.

Many a time, there is conflict between teacher and students during PhD. Students drop out of the program due to many issues. In my life, I have seen so many cases. Therefore, one should definitely talk with former students for advice. This may prevent many mishaps before happening. (Read more such articles in PhD guidebook)

To enroll in a good institute, you must have GATE. Once you have GATE, the financial constraint is solved for at least 4 years. You get good scholarship. Then, every organization or university has their own entrance exam. UGC has made it mandatory. Students have to appear. So, one needs to prepare for it. Generally, questions are set inhouse keeping in mind the the program to be enrolled in. The questions are of basic nature of the relevant field. Generally, it should be easy to moderate level since it is more or less formality in case of many state universities where student enrollment rate is low. In case of programs which are in top demand, one may have to prepare keeping in mind the completion. After, entrance test, there is an interview in which one has to appear before a panel. The panel decides the candidates.

How to choose an institute for your Ph.D? : 03

Generally, we all like to apply for the best institute for Ph.D. However, there are some other factors too. It depends on your mindset to great extent. If you are a bright studious student, you do not have to worry. You clear GATE, entrance exams and interviews to be enrolled in a class one institute like IITs, IISC, IISERs, or Reserch Institutes run by Government bodies. Then, you have state run universities or organizations and deemed universities where you can go for Ph.D. There is a vast difference between these two types. In the first type, you do not have to worry about scholarship and research facilities at all while in the second type you have to manage and hustle during your course. Many such institutes even do not give scholarships or its very meagre in amount. Above all, you can go for overseas to do PhD. While doing so, you have to keep in mind that there is no turning back because facilities back home will never entice you.

Generally, people with research and development bent of mind prefer the first type because they are clear of their goal regarding academic career ahead. On the other hand, the second type is suitable for part timers. Some people do it simply for career advancement such as someone is working in a college, he or she needs a PhD degree to move up. There  is  exception too who may do exceptional work in such a tight set up.
