PhD synopsis & registration:07

After the course work or towards the end of your course work (depending on the organization), you are to submit one PhD synopsis to Research Committee overseeing the PhD programs. The synopsis is a summary of the intended research project.  The format would be the following in serial order.
1. Introduction with research gap
2. Literature review
3. Aims
4. Research methodology
5. References
As all of us has prepared thesis for masters, I am counting that all of us are acquainted with all the heads. Generally, you are asked to give the presentation. In this stage, you are forming your initial idea. So, you can be relaxed with the aims and objectives. The research committee may suggest modification in aims and methodology.
Before, registration of your research project, you will get enough time to forge your idea. You can modify your aims and objectives or refine your research methodology during this time. After registration, some organizations do not allow to change the project title and objectives. So, one should be careful regarding this. Therefore, the report which you submit in your registration time should be perfect and flawless. Otherwise, you will be deep trouble. Finally, your title and objectives will be matched at the time of final submission which is maintained in the organization through an individual file in the administration of the organization.

Course work of PhD:06

PhD students need to do course work. In earlier days, it was not necessary. As the institutes started regular programs with high scholarships, it was made mandatory by UGC. Course work is of six months long having 4 to 6 subjects. Research methodology is the main staple of this course. Now a days, people include ethics related subjects too. Apart from these general subjects, you have subjects related to your topics which you wish to pursue for laying ground work. For regular students, attending course work is not problem but part timers have to take leave from the employers for attending classes and appearing exams. This is where it gets a little bit problem. This is the general pattern in most of the state & central universities. In some organizations, there may be a little bit of difference.

The course work is not difficult because research methodology and other ethics related subjects are theory type. If you can remember things, it should not be problem. On the other hand, subjects of your domain will be more or less exposed to you during your graduation and master. It will be more like revise. So, you are required to put little effort. In some organizations, these domain related subjects may be in difficult level . People get backlogs also.

Choosing a guide for your PhD:05

Many a time, students are familiar with the people at the teaching positions. If you have done masters from the same institute, it will be easy to contact a guide. Problem arises when you are applying someplace which is new to you. In that case, you are totally in new waters. Now, there are techniques to develop relationships and rapport. In such case, students are advisable to develop familiarity through conferences and workshops or other social media medium such as LinkedIn. You have to showcase your talent and intent for research and development. Your participation in such brain stimulating sessions will definitely bring the attention. If you are unable to do anything as such, you have to prepare hard for the interview round. Generally, interview panel asks you that whom you want to approach as guide. If you have already reached the concerned person, your interview round becomes a bit comfy. Otherwise, you have to be satisfied with what you get.

Many a time, there is conflict between teacher and students during PhD. Students drop out of the program due to many issues. In my life, I have seen so many cases. Therefore, one should definitely talk with former students for advice. This may prevent many mishaps before happening. (Read more such articles in PhD guidebook)
