Persuasion is a skill. A new employee has to learn to persuade people to get work done. As per my experience, persuasion depends on a few factors such as your credibility and likability. If you have dubious credibility, people will try to cut corners regarding anything and everything. No matter, how hard you try, you will hit a brick wall. Then, the other factor is likability. If they like you, they tend to associate with you. So, persuading other people to get on board and carry out an activity should not be difficult.

All these factors are linked to your image and behaviour since the time of joining. People observe and develop a notion about you from the work you have carried out so far. If people have no good experience with you regarding any of the above, they will refrain from participating wholeheartedly even if it is mandated to do so. In that scenario, you will have a hard time and your result will not be great. It becomes a vicious circle. Even if, one wants to start afresh, he will be stuck for good.

Well, all these are regarding getting people associated with you at the outset. Then you have an uphill task you have to go in a certain direction. For that matter, you have to communicate convincingly with clear outcomes in mind. While getting people in your favour, you should talk from the point of view of their benefits. When people see advantages in associating with you regarding something, they will work on a priority basis. Otherwise, people will have some doubts about your plans even though they will have trust. Taking all along and leaving no one behind in sticky situations are some other aspects which need to be considered in due course of time.

Long back, I met an officer in an organization. He used to meet warmly and speak very gracefully in a positive manner. Behind his back, people used to say that he spoke smoothly all the time even if the work would not be done anyway.  Later, he climbed to higher echelons in another organization after switching from the first one. Everyone knows that many things cannot be done immediately in some matters where higher authorities need to take cognizance.

 

In such situations, many officials get agitated when approached again and again. One needs to understand that not all people have high levels of patience. They need everything immediately like things in a shop. Many organizations have a structure and they operate in a queer way. So, being a mere employee, you just do not have a choice but to wait for instructions from the authority. In such cases, you can only talk sweetly like a sweetheart. It does not give the other person any kind of fuel to be agitated which is not at all good for anybody. 

 

Many a time, people resort to verbal slurs and it shows incapability to handle things. Till you are in that post, you have no option but to show a smiley face welcoming everybody. It does help in the long run because hot heads do go up. They are seated on the back bench.

In jobs, you will have assignments to work in a team. Sometimes, the team will be well-known to you. Working in such an environment is not that difficult. Then, sometimes, the teammates will be strangers. As an employee working on government assignments, we are frequently sent to places never seen in life and meet people totally strangers. Working in such places with such unknown people, you will feel yourself in strange waters. But, others are also bound by their duty and so, somehow things get by. Sometimes, it is an exceptional experience and most of the time, it is just below average which leaves a hell of a scare. In private jobs, you will not have such experiences at least with the teammates.

In such situations, you have to quickly establish a workable relationship. For that matter, you have to be flexible, kind and humble. While striking up a conversation, you can start with a regular job description and slowly discuss their family background. Sometimes, people do not like to share but most of the time people want to talk about their places, homes and family. Their facial expressions light up. You cannot expect someone to be a hardcore expert on international affairs which you see all the time in your YouTube playlist. 

Generally, experience plays an important role in developing such social skills. If somebody is from a farming family, you can ask about farming in their local area. It is just a template. You have to keep on improvising while talking with different members of the team. Off late, we limit ourselves to our domain. As one progresses, one has to develop some workable knowledge of finance, politics, technology, history, culture, local area, geography etc. 

While striking the conversation, you should not be someone who knows everything and delivers sermons. Rather than developing a rapport, it will repel people and make you a laughing stock. There should be a subtle touch.
