Are You Employable by Private or Govt Sector Companies?

As I remember, the private sector came into prominence in the early 2000s in India. It was the time of the dot com bubble. The tech sectors were booming and at their peak. Young boys & girls started getting an insane amount of money in companies. Suddenly, they were buying flats in posh areas of Mumbai, Pune, Banglore etc. Many went overseas like Australia, the USA, and Canada to start a new promising life. This trickle down to other sectors also.

Moreover, India was opening up then. This expedited the process. The government sector also felt the pinch as people opted for private-sector jobs. Then Government brought two pay commissions in the last two decades to make the wages at par with the private sector. Then, the tech sector went a little bit downhill in terms of employment. Moreover, there was an overflow of job seekers to the tech sector’s making it saturated. It lost its shine and became low paying redundant sector.

The government sectors with its 7th pay commissions have become lucrative to students. Apart from that, people are looking for job security. But, job security in these times is a myth. We have seen many instances in Assam, such as Jagirod & Silchar paper mills. All were good in the past, and now it is useless junk. Recently, the Government of India has set up a body called the Department of Investment & Public Asset Management under the Ministry of Finance to sell non-performing assets or loss-making PSU companies such as Pawan Hans, Air India, Bharat Pumps & compressors, etc. India will witness more of such drives in the coming years. The concept is that the “Government has no business in running a business”. The whole set-up follows the USA system where Government manages only a few sectors such as defence, public administration, healthcare etc.

Now coming back to the recruitment scenario, it seems that the tech sector has regained its strength as we hear stories of people getting an immense amount of packages in IITs. That will be lakhs for people not in IIT, which should be remembered. But, the tech sector has changed this time. It has matured. So, it is demanding specialist people for operations. Its nature is like that it will give money only to specialists. Keeping that in mind, the job seekers have to ask what we offer to employers. People have to learn the new age technologies of their field and be specialists. The whole scenario can be compared with the familiar scene of unskilled workers gathering each morning at town ‘chowk’ while the skilled ones get phone calls from employers directly.

Even though job market is opening up, there is a growing unwillingness of students to join private sector companies. But, students have to ask whether they are not opting or the companies won’t select them. It is good to prepare for Govt jobs. But, these are in short supply and will be scarcer in coming years as Government is withdrawing its presence from many areas and letting the private sector operate. We should remember that the private sector is good talent spotters because money is involved in their decisions. If one is not worthy of the private sector, he may most probably not be that suitable for the government sector too because, one may not be equipped with skills like soft skills & hard skills. Soft skills are like communication skills, leadership, team work, critical thinking, problem solving etc. The hard skills are like management skills, tech skills, analytical skills via various tools, financial skills and project management skills.

Students should not discount promising private enterprises and definitely go for recruitment in that field and feel the interview process. Sitting in the interview is an experience. As per my experience, only a tiny percentage of people can crack an interview on the first attempt. I have sat in many interviews, and I am not ashamed of it. You face rejection and then prepare well for the next one. In the process, you learn and toughen up. At last, you will be able to crack as you have passed the knowledge barrier or threshold to enter the big placed club. Therefore, one should try in every way.

Do you put your future in others' hands? (Sunday Binge Reading:04)

Do you put your future in others' hands?

The question might be a silly one to ask. But, some students trust others more than themselves for their future. Let me tell you a true story. In 2011, I worked in a private engineering college at Guwahati as a faculty member. One of my family friend's sons came to study in that college. The boy's father met me and told me to watch out for his son as he was spending so much money on his son. I told him not to worry. He added that his uncle would get him to work in a PSU after his engineering degree. His uncle was working there at a high-ranking post. I did not know whether it was possible or not since neither anyone from my family nor known ones in any PSUs. It might happen; who knows. It just slipped out of my mind.

I left the college after a few months. Time flew very fast. A few years ago, I met the person at a market in Jorhat and enquired about his son. He told me that his son was doing something in some firm and reluctant to talk more. But, he voluntarily spoke of his mind that the uncle did not help his son at all. This might be the story of many students who are overly dependent on others for the future.

Let me tell you another story. Along with many of my friends, I went to do an internship at a PSU. Then, one of my friends pointed out to a man he seemed to know. He ignored my friend and tried to move away. When I asked him about the matter, he told me that the guy was ashamed of meeting him because he projected himself as a big shot in his village with all his cash & cars in marriage parties. The guy never expected him to meet him there while working under a shack and repairing a motor. Some people try to project themselves as a big shot. Many people exploit others in many ways. People also blindly follow them and get deceived.

My friend's dream seemed to be shattered. Well, that was good for him. Later on, he got there any way on merit by cracking an off-campus exam. Now, coming back to the first story, the parents had made a mistake by giving the false signal to the boy that there was somebody to help him in the future. He let the guard down and never worked on his studies& skills. As a result, he remained unemployable. Therefore, we should depend on ourselves only. Trusting others for the future is a futile exercise.

Considering Oneself as a Business of One (Sunday Binge Reading:03)

Business is not popular in Assam. People do not have faith in it. There is a trend in the West to consider oneself as a business of one even in the job. By definition of business, we understand that someone is selling something to earn money. We can say that we are trading our services to the employer in return for remuneration in terms of employment. So, an employer would like to recruit a specialist for the job rather than a novice.

The modern world is getting tough day by day. The recent trend in the job market shows that government sector jobs are dwindling in numbers in every sphere. The vacancy for UPSC has come down drastically in the past five years. This is due to the penetration of computers in every sector. Nowadays, an office does not need a room full of people as a simple excel sheet can do a hundred men’s jobs in a split second. There is no reason to despair. There are plenty of high-paying jobs, but these are for skilled & specialized people. This is the age of skilled people. They can negotiate with the employers for high pay. The recent trends in tech sector companies say that loudly as people switch from one company to another for a better salary. The companies are also coming with attractive propositions like an insurance agent with hundreds of schemes. Therefore, students have to skill themselves with new age technologies in their respective fields. Moreover, the governments are pushing more and more for startups these days. Whether a startup or a job, we are all like a business offering something to someone for money. Nurturing the mentality will help us.

Avoiding Herd Mentality During College Life (Sunday Binge Reading:02)

Herd mentality means behaving in a particular pattern. Herd mentality has both advantages and disadvantages. In nature, we see some animals live in herds. The herd provides the necessary safety when a predator attacks. You can observe a pack of wild buffalos, which often become dominant over the predators such as tigers & lions. We humans also lived in herds thousands of years ago. As we progressed, we learned to be independent as there is no fear of such vicious imminent predator attack. But, the instinct is still hidden in our subconscious mind. At times, it forces us to remain in the herd because it provides anonymity and escape route from impending responsibility. In modern times, herd mentality rather affects adversely. It hinders humans from becoming a leader. In other words, leadership is looked at as responsibility and hence a liability.
Students in colleges & hostels spend most of their time with friends. If the group has lazy people in it, it influences the whole group. All the people in the group behave more or less the same lazy way because they find solace in their companionship. The group mentality helps the ‘ herd mentality' to be dominant over their decisions in every respect, such as seeking good marks in exams & appearing for competitive exams etc. Sooner or later, they lose their edge, and they enter the vicious circle of dullness. The herd mentality has to be changed. No one can live like that forever. One should make decisions that are in the better interest of himself, not because of others in their social circle. If you think that something is good for you, you should go ahead. This is called breaking the barrier of herd mentality. Ultimately, these steps will help you be a better leader in the future because you make your own decision.
As a Training & placement coordinator, I have seen so many students having this herd mentality and never coming out. This ultimately hurts them. By the time they realize it, it is almost late. Once you are out of college, you become a lone player. Your past actions will judge you and bad decisions taken as a herd member will haunt you forever. So, make the right choices and never let others control your life.
