Remember what you read!!!! Digest what you read!!! (Sunday Binge Reading: 07)

Every day, we see a lot, hear a lot and read a lot, and at the end of the day, we forget most of it. Our minds are made to forget things. Otherwise, our minds will be full of things. As a student, we have to learn a lot every day. Some subjects are easy to remember because they have certain concepts which can be related. You read the subject, understand the underlying concept and you are done. Mathematics is such a subject.

On the other hand, you get subjects like history, geography etc. These subjects need to be memorized. Every program has those kinds of topics or concepts which need to be memorized. There are some techniques.

(1) In the first technique, suppose you have a subject that has a certain portion that needs to be memorized. You make the notes in bullet points and start slowly. Every day, you read one page and try to repeat it in your mind in your leisure time. The next day, you load a new page and do the same. You continue until it is complete. You will see that things have been engraved in your mind. Most IAS aspirants use this technique because they have to cover a lot of current affairs. There is no other option but to memorize them.

(2) In the second technique, you remember things relating to some day to day life objects or fun things.

 (3) In the third technique, you teach somebody else, and in the process, your concept gets cleared, and you remember the concepts for good. It is known as Feynman Technique, developed by renowned physicist Richard Feynman. Now, there is a problem, and you do not get people to teach because people do not care too much about what you have to tell. In that case, you can make excellent video explaining things. It pretty much does it. Later on, you can either upload it online or dump it somewhere. Your job is done. That is a happy ending.

What Chetan Bhagat Has to say about Networking? ( Sunday Binge Reading: 06)

(Courtesy: pexels.com)

Chetan Bhagat is an Indian author. He writes novels. I learned about him when his first book called ‘Five Point Someone was a massive hit. I got the book from one of my friends. He did not read any novel. But, it was so hit in our time, and he got a copy and read it. Knowing me as a novel buff, he told me the story and offered me the book. I got it and read it overnight. Later on, he wrote many other novels like ‘Three mistakes of my Life’, ‘Two sates’, ‘One night at a call centre’, ‘One Indian girl’ etc. These novels have been turned into major Bollywood movies like ‘Three Idiots’, ‘Two States’, etc. They were pretty hits. He is still writing and engaging people through various social media platforms. As an engineering student and former banker, Chetan Bhagat offers valuable advice. One day, while scouring his YouTube profile, I stumbled upon a video of him on networking. Being associated with T & P activities, I was very interested in the video and watched it.

In the video, he talks about the importance of networking and how his networking helped him to get into Bollywood films. One should keep in mind that if one has a great story, the next logical thing is to convert the story into a movie. In our context, we can apply the same principle in everyday life. We need to extend our network. Now a day, people say that network is net worth. It is quite right. Specifically, students have to meet people in their relevant field of interest and develop it. It has many benefits such as information sharing, references, etc.

Besides networking, he goes on to how to network and communicate while networking. We know that social media is excellent for networking. We have Facebook for informal ones and Linked In for formal ones. Chetan stresses learning the craft of talking with people. He tells people to ask simple questions about their home town or jobs, career, education to start a conversation. Once you strike a conversation, one may ask follow-up questions judging the directions of the conversation. People love to talk about themselves, and nowadays, nobody likes to hear nobody. Once you master the art, you become a master in networking without giving away much of your information. Here is the video you can watch:
