We all
want to be successful. There are some skills that we need to develop over time.
These may seem redundant, but they are essential. When you analyze a successful
person, you will notice these traits. As a budding student, you are to be
mindful of them.
1.
Writing
We have always been writing since our school days. Yet,
we need help with writing a report. In the future, you will be asked to write a
report about anything. Knowing how to draft a report is a good skill. One
should master it as quickly as possible. I still see people needing help with
writing a report and depending on others. Now, you must see it is due to your
need for more expertise in a certain language or knowledge. Sometimes, it could
be both. Nothing is impossible. One must be diligent in mastering anything.
Sometimes, you may need more writing skills. That can be honed by writing
a few paragraphs each day. This could be on anything, or you can write a diary.
I see Ph.D. students struggling to write papers. Now a day, you have a lot of
online software which can help you with grammar and rephrasing sentences so
that your language is not redundant.
2. Public Speaking
Sooner or later in life, we have to go out and address
people because we will no longer be trainees or novices in any field for our
whole life. You have to move forward and take responsibility. People will look
up to you for leadership. You have to address people. Many people get exposure
to public speaking through reciting, debates, quizzes, etc., during their early
days, but some still need such exposure. The stage of fear stays. We have to
address stage fear gradually. While talking about something, one can express
things clearly that one has experienced oneself. Otherwise, if you want to
fabricate something, it becomes a drama, and one makes a mess.
Moreover, people are always interested to hear a story
because we are made like this. Since the dawn of civilization, humans have
stayed in groups and shared stories as a lesson or form of entertainment. That
is why we see films, plays, and novels in our culture. Over some time, I have
gone through books by Dale Carnegie and devised a way for myself. This may be
useful to you. You record your daily activities on your smartphone and replay
them. Once you become an expert, you make it more challenging by putting news
items in your sessions and then work on your verbal fluency by taking a random
word and saying a few lines by using that word. Initially, you may see many
things that could be improved while speaking. Once you become an expert, you
have to work on your 'umms' and 'ahhs' in your sentences through strategic
pauses. By doing so, you will achieve a lot. You will become more confident. It
takes time but worth it.
3.
Problem-solving
Problem solvers are the asset. I have seen many people
who need more problem-solving abilities. It could be anywhere in offices,
schools, colleges, etc. They make any minor issue a big one. Working with such
people is very painful. People stay away from them. When we have a problem, we have
to find a simple solution. Sometimes it is common sense, and implement it. If
you cannot find a solution, talk to people who can show you the way. Sitting on
the problem will only magnify it.
4. Generosity
When you think that you have enough, you become generous.
It is different from donating all the time. You can be generous by helping
people in any endeavor. If you help someone junior in his studies, that can be
considered generous behavior. People remember these small acts of kindness.
5. Ego
People may have egos about their caste, money, and even
knowledge. Keeping an ego check can help us achieve a lot. The ego sets our
attitude. I have seen people who think that they know, and at the end of the
day, they know nothing making a fool of themselves. People mock such people
behind their backs for their ignorance. So, one should be humble and keep the
ego in check to absorb knowledge. In our days, after passing in flying colors
in 10th, people became very pumped up, and then the 12th result would badly hurt
the egos of such pumped-up kids.
6. Negotiating
Negotiation is a skill. One has to have it. Even in our
day-to-day life, we do a lot of negotiation. When you become an expert in any
negotiation, the other parties also become happy for being consulted and coming
to a mutual decision.
7. Emotional intelligence
Now a day, people stress a lot about emotional
intelligence. It is an extensive topic. In a nutshell, it deals with the
understanding of the emotions of oneself and others at the same time. So, A
person with high emotional intelligence can effectively communicate with
others. When you share well, you connect with people easily in society.Suppose, in a working place,
you can be a selfish & childish brat making others' lives difficult or you
can be an understanding one taking others along with you. You make the place
comfortable to work in rather than a snake pit. The highest example of
emotional intelligence in India could be Prime Minister Narendra Modi. People
of every state can relate to him when he starts his speech in their language;
however, it may be a few broken lines.
