As a job seeker, I always wondered what a recruiter wanted during an interview. Our generation of students just used the trial-error approach for the interviews. Sometimes something clicked for somebody. Nowadays, there are a lot of resources on this topic. Still, in India, we are using the same approach as the former generations. A few people observe things from this perspective and get rewarded.
The recruiters are like shoppers. They come shopping. A few years ago, they used to go to the ivy league institutes for placements such as IITs & IIMs. Nowadays, they also come to the colleges in tier two cities or organize pool campuses at a central location. The reason is that they are no longer in a position to pay high wages to the students at those institutes since they want to maximize profitability. So, we should understand that they need people. So, they will haggle with you at the interviews. It is in your interest to know your worth.
Moreover, the recruiters are after some specific characteristics in students. For a few days, I have been reading some posts & watching some videos in these directions, mostly TED talks. I learned that they look for leadership, teamwork & critical thinking capabilities in the students. According to the recruiters, they can get the best-skilled people quickly without any problem, but they face many challenges in picking students with good leadership qualities. Candidates with good leadership qualities are hot cakes in the job market nowadays as they will lead the company forward.
It is tough to be a leader but not impossible. Leadership quality can be nurtured by exposure to various situations. It is earned by experience. Leading people is difficult. If you are good at it, the organization will reach zenith. So, taking part in extra curricular activities and honing networking are the some steps in this direction.
